BREAKING: Russia Releases American Teacher After More Than Four Years in Prison

Russia has released Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old retired American teacher, after more than four years in detention.

Hubbard, originally from Michigan, was detained in Ukraine in April 2022 after Russia accused him of fighting alongside Ukrainian forces. In October 2024, a Russian court sentenced him to six years and ten months in prison for mercenary-related offenses.

However, Hubbard’s family disputed the allegations, and the US government classified him as wrongfully detained.

His release on October 21, 2026, followed a reported direct appeal from US President Donald Trump to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump said no prisoner exchange was required and welcomed Hubbard’s release. Russian officials also cited humanitarian considerations, including his health.

The development marks a significant moment in US–Russia relations, which remain strained by the ongoing war in Ukraine.

For Hubbard and his family, however, the biggest news is personal: after years behind bars, he is finally free and was reported to be on his way home.
